It's Chinese New Year's Eve!
How are the preparations for CNY coming along?
This year my family is not clebrating CNY, bcos my Ah Ma passed away last year... It's part of the chinese tradition to refrain from any joyous celebration as a sign of mourning.
So what did we do for Chinese New Year's Eve this year?
In the morning, my parents offered ancestral worship to Ah Gong and Ah Ma.... That's Mummy putting joss sticks at the altar. Dad has already finished praying, and he's napping one corner...
And Buddy is walking about and minding his own business.
The old man snoozes... The old dog snoozes too....
Buddy was sick for the pass 2 weeks.... It was such a scary period for us all. Trips to the vet, ultrasound, medication upon medication.... I thought we were going to lose him.. :'(
Mummy and I took turns to feed him medicine.
After all the medicine he's on, he definitely looks much better now. Hang in there, Bubu. *hugs and kisses*
About eleven plus, Jason and Mummy started to prepare for lunch.
The kitchen can get pretty warm during cooking... To combat the heat, we placed 1 fan inside the kitchen and 1 fan outside the kitchen to improve air circulation!
The strategy is like this... The outside fan would bring in cool air into the kitchen, and the inside fan would help to circulate the air in the kitchen.
Did it work? Ehm, not really.... Bcos both fans were abit rosak.... Firstly, they weren't powerful enough. Secondly, they were tilted in certain position (the rotating function was faulty)... Sigh. Better luck (or fans) next time bah!
Hubbs and Mummy preparing food at the kitchen sink. Meanwhile, I helped to deshell Gingkgo seeds at the table...
My mum was feeling stressed with lunch + dinner preparation and dishes to cook for tomorrow..... Eldest Uncle is in town, and he's coming over for dinner in the evening.
Hubbs and I would be going over to my in-laws places for Reunion dinner, and this would mean Mummy has no one to help her with dinner and tomorrow's dishes.
I guess I can understand why she's cooking dinner. But I couldn't understand why she's still cooking for tomorrow...... My Mum explained after hosting CNY for so many years, there might be a possibility a relative (blur blur type) might turn up for visitation.... So this is like a just-in-case measure.
Anyway, back to my Gingko seeds story.....
You know what? I really love hate deshelling Gingko seeds!
When Mummy asked me to help deshell the Gingko seeds, I didn't have to heart to tell her bcos she was so stressed with food preparation.....
Deep inside my heart, I felt I wanted to tear my hair out!
AHHH AHHH!!! WHY ME? WHY ME? *tears my hair out*
They always say this.... Practice makes prefect. I guess it's quite true.
Practice made me master the smokey eye shadow technique.... Practice made me be better with gaming..... Practice made me increase my stamina and run further (yay!).... Practice made me walk Buddy better.... Practice made me make better cupcakes!
But....
Deshelling Gingko seeds is something I cannot master.... Although it's a simple task, I still cannot get it right with multiple practices....It's so frustrating! I really dislike this. Argh!
When Faith was still in Singapore, my Mum would assign her to deshell the Gingko seeds. My sister is quite good at that.... All the seeds that she deshell would be perfect, whole ones...
Pestle and mortar to crack the hardy shells.
Gingko seed #93
Firstly, balance the seed at the rim. Secondly, crack the bottom part..
Thirdly, remove the shells...
Why do I always end up with oddly cracked shells like this???
Do I have to dig this seed out?!?
These are the end products...
25% would be perfect, whole ones.
65% would be cracked in the middle... Got juice come out somemore... Ehm.. -_-
10% would be half gone... wtf.
I'm not meant to do this la.... AHHH! *tears hair again*
Now you know why I hate doing this... =(
The half abused Gingko seeds would go into soaking...
Haiyo.... I spotted some jialat ones. Sigh! I don't what to do this again!
Thankfully, there is an end to all bad things. :)
Somemore seeds to go, before I can wrap things up....
After that grueling experience, nothing brightens my day more than having yummy food with my family. We happened to have grape juice in storage, so we opened it and shared with everyone.
Light hearted conversations over steamboat. It was nice. :)
To the my in-law's place later!
Have a good reunion everyone!
